Shop Thrift First

I went into the local thrift store between stops yesterday,  with the hope of finding another piece of milk glass to add to my collection; which I was unsuccessful in finding. However, I was pleased to find my new to me, spring purse, for the bargain price of $1.00.  Why not Re-USE?

ART out of ANYTHING
I am an artist and a designer. While I am a strong advocate of investing in fine original art pieces; as they are an investment and support a community of creators; I have been known to use the most unlikely of objects to decorate a wall, from the high end pieces to the very inexpensive and even free.   This is really another treasure hunting opportunity.

Standard measurement cheat sheet

STANDARD KITCHEN HEIGHTS AND DEPTHS
The average finish height for countertops is 36 inches off the finish floor
The standard depth for finish countertops is 24 inches

Upper counter cabinets are built with an average depth of 12 inches.
Upper cabinets above the refrigerator and other large appliances are often 24 inches deep (twice the average depth) to make accessing them beyond the appliance possible.
Custom-built upper cabinets measure an average of 14 inches deep, often to accommodate oversized dinnerware and food storage

STANDARD HEIGHT AND DEPTH OF BATHROOM VANITY
Standard height of a bathroom vanity is 30- to 32-inches.
The standard vanity depth is 21 inches

In a small powder room,  you can gain floor space by trimming at least part of the vanity to 18, 15, or even 12 inches deep

For a double sink, you'll need at least 60 inches from side to side, 72 inches if possible.

You might also find the 30- or 32-inch standard height of a vanity too low. If so, consider building up the toekick on a stock vanity or ordering a taller one that stands 34 to 36 inches off the floor

STANDARD BED SIZES
Standard Bunk Bed Size 39" x 75" Small, for one adult or child; good selection for school-age children; upper and lower

Narrow Bunk Bed Size 36" x 75" Small, for one child; good selection for pre-teens; upper and lower

Twin Bed Size / Single Bed Size 39" x 75" Small, for one adult; good selection for guest accommodations

Twin Extra Long Bed Size 39" x 80" Bed linens can be difficult to locate and purchase

Full Bed Size/ Double Bed Size 54"x 75" Wide enough for a large adult or two small adults

Queen Bed Size 60"x 80" Best selection for two adults but possibly too small for some

California Queen Bed Size 60"x 84"  inches longer than standard Queen

Expanded Queen Bed Size 66" x 80" inches wider than standard Queen

Super Queen Bed Size 66" x 80"6 inches wider than standard Queen, also thicker

King Bed Size 76" x 80" Standard King

California King Bed Size 72" x 84" Not as wide but longer than a standard King

Grand King Bed Size 80" x 98" For really large and tall people

STANDARD HEIGHT FOR HANGING A CHANDILIER ABOVE THE DINING TABLE

As far as dining room and kitchen tables, the key thing to keep in mind is that the bottom of the fixture should not interfere with the sight of line between people gathered and sitting around the table. Typically, the measurement is around 36" from the table top to the bottom of the fixture

Chalk Board Paint

Benjamin Moore just came out with a new product... Chalk Board paint in ANY color! I Picked up a can of black, to do a little project inspired by Pinterest.  Also, I am looking forward to painting a wall in my daughters new room with a colored version.  I will post pictures when it is done.  Chalkboard paint is incredibly versatile. Use your imagination and have some fun!

Inexpensive Art for kids

My kids love this painting project!
  • Ice Cube tray
  • food coloring watered down
  • water
  • brushes
  • basic white paper cut into small pieces.
For meer pennies, the kids create beautiful vibrant miniature artworks.
These will be Valentines!

Updated Vintage Light Fixture.

I am a huge fan of vintage/ antique light fixtures. Occasionally they need a  bit of up-dating. With a lick of paint almost any chandelier can be transformed into a beautiful conversation piece. This piece was a gift from family and will be used in my teen daughters room.

Two vintage sconces I found at a flea market for $60.00 for the pair. I sprayed out the same color and will have wired up.  Before hanging them in my daughters room, I used them in the 2012 Garden tour as candle sconces, as seen below.

Sheet Education

Yesterday, I went blindly into the unknown world of bedding.  I was with a client who is building a bed and breakfast resort. In this department, I was as stumped as she was. Standing in the big box department store staring at a wall of dozens of possibilities... 2, 3, 400, 1000 thread count, cotton, silk, linen, bamboo, hemp, T-shirt, fleece, Italian, Egyptian, Yikes!  The customer service consultant did her best to help answer our questions, but honestly it sounded more like she was guessing than assuring. So, as ever, when I just don't know, I defer to the experts.  In this case I went to the Guru's of the bedding world for beducation. Linda and Kandice of OLIVE AND ELLE.
My take away after a long conversation with Kandice: thread count does not matter.  1000 thread count sounds better but does not make for a softer or more durable sheet.
To simplify the influx of information, the BEST SHEETS to purchase... Italian or Egyptian  made, 200-400 thread count.  Why you ask? well, you'll either have to take my word for it or Pop into Olive and Elle and ask Linda or Kandice for the tutorial.

vintage Candle light

Due to a car accident in my neighbourhood, there was a 2000 home power outage for 4 hours last night.  In an attempt to keep the house warm in -6 degree weather and provide a modicum of light, I lit a bag full of tealight candles.  Inspired by an image I have seen before, I took a vintage cupcake tin , I purchased at a flea market for $3; that I usually have hanging in a grouping on the kitchen wall; and filled up the cups with tealights. I was quite pleased with the effect and therefore decided to share the idea with you.

Kids Lunch Time

Being a mom of 4 children, the oldest of which is 14 and the youngest being 3; I have made my fair share of school lunches.  While I am guilty of throwing a packaged granola bar into the pack, I also want to add a healthy snack.  Day after day, the apple I popped into their lunch kit came home un-eaten.  If I cut them up into bite size pieces, they came home with a complaint of being brown.  Here then, is my solution...
Cinnamon Sugar apples.  With a very small amount of brown sugar, and a good sprinkle of cinnamon, the apples will be tasty and won't appear brown. The cinnamon makes the apples look really sugary, when really, there is just a touch of sugar. My kids love them, peel and all.  The apple never comes back home now!  Many of the schools these days are peanut free, however, if your childs school isn't, putting peanut butter between the layers is a hit with my kiddos too.

One of my daughters, is a super picky eater! Her favorite sandwich, natural honey and cinnamon, both super foods.  I don't mind sending this sandwich at all and it makes great yummy snack.

One Last thought... recently I picked up this great ECO friendly, re-usable lunch baggie. It's trendy, environmentally responsible, food safe and saves money in the long run.

  • Core apple
  • Slice into thin slices
  • Sprinkle cinnamon and sugar onto plate and rub each apple into it. (I like to rub 2 apples together!)
  • Re-assemble apple into apple shape and hold together with elastic band.
